Viticulture is the part of WSET Level 2 that explains everything downstream. Climate, site and vineyard decisions set the ripeness, acidity and concentration of the fruit long before the winemaker touches it. Get comfortable here and a lot of the theory in other sections starts to make sense on its own.

The exam tends to test cause and effect. It will describe a climate or a vineyard practice and ask what result it produces, or hand you a style and ask which factor explains it. That is a reasoning task, not a recall task, and it is exactly the kind of question that separates a Merit from a Distinction.

The five questions below cover the essentials: climate types, the main hazards, and the vineyard tools growers use to shape the crop. Read each explanation for the mechanism behind the answer. Once you can explain why altitude cools a site or why a spring frost matters, you will not need to memorise the fact at all.
